Voyage to the Canal

In this first photo our ship is just pulling into the first lock of the Panama Canal from the Caribbean leading into Gatun Lake. It was absolutely fascinating to see the engineering technology of the locks work as they filled with water in just minutes, floating our 97,000 ton ship and alowing us to move into the next lock before being raised to the level of the lake.

If you look on both sides of the lock there are small silver railway tugs called mules that are at both bow and stern of the ship and they control the speed at which ships can traverse the locks. There was only a few inches between the wall of the lock and the sides of the ship.
